What is Conversion Rate?

Conversion rate is the percentage of website visitors or ad viewers who complete a desired action — most commonly, making a purchase. In e-commerce, it is calculated by dividing the number of transactions by the number of sessions and multiplying by 100. It is the single most important metric for evaluating whether a product listing is effectively turning browsers into buyers.

Understanding Conversion Rate.

Average e-commerce conversion rates typically fall between 1 and 4 percent, varying significantly by industry, price point, and traffic source. Fashion and apparel tends to convert at the lower end, while consumables and niche products often convert higher. Understanding these benchmarks is critical because a seemingly small improvement — moving from 2 percent to 3 percent — represents a 50 percent increase in revenue from the same traffic volume.

Multiple factors influence conversion rate: pricing, product descriptions, reviews, page load speed, trust signals, and checkout friction. However, research consistently identifies product imagery as the most influential visual element. A study by Justuno found that 93 percent of online shoppers consider visual appearance to be the key deciding factor in a purchase. When the imagery is weak, no amount of copywriting or pricing optimization can fully compensate.

Conversion rate optimization (CRO) as a discipline involves systematic testing of page elements to identify what drives purchases. A/B testing different product images — angles, backgrounds, lifestyle versus studio, with or without models — is one of the highest-leverage CRO activities. The challenge has always been the cost and time required to produce image variants for testing. Generating only one version of each product image means leaving conversion gains on the table.

How It Relates to AI Photography.

AI photography directly addresses the image-testing bottleneck that limits conversion rate optimization. When generating a new image variant costs minutes instead of hundreds of dollars, brands can run meaningful A/B tests on visual content for the first time. Dezygn's batch processing capabilities allow sellers to produce multiple image variations per product, test them across channels, and systematically identify which visual treatments drive the highest conversion rates for their specific audience and category.
