What is White Background Photography?
White background photography captures products against a pure white or near-white backdrop, isolating the item from any environmental context. It is the most universal format in e-commerce because it presents products cleanly, loads quickly, and meets the listing requirements of major marketplaces like Amazon, Walmart, and eBay. The white background ensures that the product itself is the sole focus of the image.
Understanding White Background Photography.
Amazon's main image requirement — products must be photographed on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) filling at least 85 percent of the frame — established white background photography as the default standard for online retail. Other marketplaces have adopted similar guidelines, making white-background shots a non-negotiable requirement for multi-channel sellers. The uniformity creates a level visual playing field in search results where every product is presented on equal terms.
Achieving a true white background requires either careful studio lighting that evenly illuminates the backdrop without casting shadows on the product, or post-production editing that replaces the original background with pure white. The studio approach uses a technique called high-key lighting, where the background is lit one to two stops brighter than the product. The post-production approach uses manual clipping paths or automated selection tools to isolate the product and place it on white.
While white-background images are essential for marketplace compliance, they have limitations as marketing assets. They provide no context about scale, use, or lifestyle appeal. For this reason, most successful e-commerce brands treat white-background shots as one element of a broader image strategy that also includes lifestyle photography, detail shots, and infographic overlays. The white-background image is the foundation, not the entirety, of visual product communication.
How It Relates to AI Photography.
Background removal and replacement is one of the most common and well-established applications of AI in product photography. Dezygn can take a product photo shot against any background — a kitchen counter, a shipping box, a cluttered desk — and isolate the product onto a clean white background that meets marketplace specifications. This capability alone saves sellers significant time and money, and it also provides the clean product cutout that serves as the starting point for generating lifestyle scenes, flat lays, and other styled variations through the platform.
